Start with preferences, not a winner
Each person can write down a few names and what they like about them: sound, a family connection, language or meaning. Leave room for different tastes. This is a way to learn about preferences, not a vote anyone has to win.
Make one short comparison list
For each contender, note pronunciation, spelling, possible nicknames and the full name together. Say it aloud if that helps. Check initials and think about how the name reads in the languages your family uses.
Use meanings as a starting point
Names can have several origins, spellings or interpretations. Treat a name finder’s meaning as a research lead. If a cultural or family connection matters to you, check it with trusted language or community sources before relying on a single description.
Separate “love,” “maybe” and “not for us”
Keep a small set of favorites and move the rest into a maybe list. You can return another day rather than repeating the whole search. Revisit a name if your preferences change; the list belongs to your family.
A simple shortlist template
For each name, write: name and pronunciation; why it appeals; full name and initials; meaning or origin to verify; nickname options; and questions to discuss. A note on paper works just as well for the conversation.
